A note from Deborah Ball on her final Dean’s Updates

Tags: deans updates

Because today marks the final time I will write to the SOE community through Dean’s Updates, I want to take a moment to thank you for everything you have contributed to our efforts as a school across the last 11 years. We were able to build on work that the community accomplished when Cecil Miskel and Karen Wixson each served as dean, as well as the significant transitions through which Joan Stark and Carl Berger led the school before them. A complete list of where we have come during this period isn’t really possible, and I sometimes think that it was in the seemingly small steps and actions we took that the larger things became possible. But I am proud of how we completed a strategic assessment and planning process, articulated our core mission centered on the study and improvement of education practice and the imperatives of diversity and equity, brought new faculty members to join our community who would contribute to defining and working toward our mission, remodeled key parts of our building, developed relationships with donors and alumni, advanced education research, built partnerships with K-12 schools, redesigned our teacher preparation programs, launched CEDER, and developed our strategic plan for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

I have been both inspired and humbled to work alongside such a dedicated group of faculty members, students, staff members, and alumni. I am grateful for all of your contributions—both large and small—that have made my time as dean productive and fulfilling. I look forward to continuing our work together as I resume my role as a faculty member at this great institution.
