Timeline 1998-2005: Karen Wixson's Tenure

1998-1999
New position created: Director of Teacher Education to increase attention to the role of teacher education in the SOE

Year-long colloquium series established to promote conversation about practice-based research done by SOE faculty; UM/MSU collaboration on a briefi ng to the U.S. Congress on teaching and learning

1999-2000
New clinical faculty appointments and a Director of Outreach appointed to emphasize connections between research and practice

Creation of Staff Advisory Council to promote good staff relations within the SOE

Dual degree in higher education and public policy established

Diversity Taskforce created to promote conversation and action regarding issues of diversity within and outside the SOE

First annual UM/MSU Superintendent’s Institute held

2000-2001
Cultural audit on issues of diversity and workplace climate conducted, followed by retreats for faculty, staff and students

First annual Martin Luther King Family Day sponsored

SOE-led Provost’s Seminar on Teaching

2001-2002
Revised undergraduate program for secondary teachers launched

New guidelines for doctoral preparation developed; The Social Justice Committee established with seed money from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation

Lives of Urban Children and Youth (LUCY) established

Institutes for Chinese K-12 and Higher Ed administrators begun

2002-2003
Capital campaign feasibility study conducted

New website launched

Faculty retreat on programmatic initiatives for all degree levels conducted

Initiative to increase faculty diversity advanced with appointments in Higher Education and Educational Studies

2004-2005
Five new faculty appointed in Higher Education, CPEP, and Ed Studies

Four Collegiate Professors named

Celebration of 125th anniversary of pedagogy chair

Year-long Social Justice Symposium series brings in outside consultants to assist the SOE in thinking through institutional responses to social justice issues

UM’s Institute for Social Research and the SOE agree to work on scaling up educational interventions developed by SOE researchers

Agreements reached for exchanges with Tianjin Normal University and Beijing Normal University

Initiated rethinking of the Teacher Education program

Began work on a Pre-K/16 initiative
