Awards and Recognitions
The School of Education is tied for 9th place in this year’s US News and World Report rankings of education schools. That is one rank up from last year’s evaluation.
Jeff Bouman, a recent doctoral graduate from Higher Education, is a co-recipient of the AERA Division J Dissertation Award. He also received the Best Dissertation award from CSHPE.
Rong Chen, a doctoral student in CSHPE, was awarded an AERA Dissertation Grant.
Brighid Dwyer, Doctoral Student in Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education, received an NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship.
Mark Engberg, a Fall 2004 CSHPE graduate, received the AERA Review of Research Award for 2004 for his article, “Improving intergroup relations in higher education: A critical examination of the infl uence of educational interventions on racial bias.” Review of Educational Research, 74(4), 473-524.
Barry Fishman, Joseph Krajcik, Phyllis Blumenfeld, and Elliott Soloway of the SOE’s Center for Learning Technologies in Urban Schools, received the Urban Impact Award from the Council of Great Cities Schools. The award was shared by the Detroit Public Schools for their partnership to improve teaching and learning of science for urban children.
Roger Goddard was the 2004 recipient of the Pattishall Award for early career faculty. Prof. Goddard delivered his Pattishall lecture on November 18, 2004.
Anne-Lise Halvorsen and Deborah Michaels, both doctoral students in Foundations and Policy Studies, have been awarded predoctoral fellowships by Rackham Graduate School.
Therese Heaton, undergraduate in Teacher Education, received the 2004 Ernest T. Sigler Award for UM Women’s Soccer. She also received the Academic All District Award from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for the second time.
Sandy Kortesoj, a doctoral student in CSHPE, was awarded an AERA Dissertation Grant. Penny Pasque, Graduate Student Research Assistant for the National Forum on Higher Education for the Public Good in CSHPE, received the 2005-2006 Gail Allen Scholarship from the Center for the Education of Women at UM.
Charles Vanover’s auto-ethnographic performance piece “Chalkboard Concerto: Growing Up as a Teacher in the Chicago Public Schools” was published in Johnny Saldaña’s anthology, Ethnodrama: An Anthology of Reality Theatre (Rowman & Littlefi eld, 2005). His new ethnodrama “Teaching the Power of the Word: Culturally Responsive Pedagogy in a Chicago Public High School,” was performed as part of the juried presentations of AERA 2004 and the Qualitative Interest Group of the University of Georgia 2005.
Yinmei Wan, a doctoral student in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education (CSHPE), has been awarded a Barbour Scholarship by Rackham Graduate School.
Helen Watt, Visiting Research Scientist in CPEP, was one of 12 fellows selected internationally to participate in the Positive Psychology Summer Institute, held in Orta San Giulio, Italy. Her presentation was on gender-differentiated psychological factors affecting interest in and enjoyment of math in grades 7-11. She also received the Early Career Researcher Award from the Australian Association for Research in Education.
Karen Wixson has been elected to the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association.
