School of Education Handbook: FAQ

This year we are launching a webpage for Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). We'll answer all questions submitted, make public all those that seem of widespread interest, and put FAQs permanently as resources on the web site. The following list is a start on this, with answers to some common questions.

If a prospective student wants to learn about teacher certification or about the MAC Program, to which office should I send him/her?

Prospective undergraduate, certification, or MAC students should be directed to the Teacher Education office in 1228 SEB, on the first floor.

If a SOE undergraduate student has an advising appointment, where would he/she go?

Student Advisors Paige Pawson and Lisa Clark have offices in the Teacher Education (1228) suite.   On Thursdays, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in Room 3003, there are general advising sessions for all interested in certification.

If a student wants to check into a MA program or find out more about doctoral studies, to which office should I send him/her?

Prospective graduate students (MA without cert, PhD) should be directed to the Education Studies Office in 1225 SEB, on the first floor.   If the prospective student expresses a clear interest in our higher education programs, please direct her/him to the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education in Suite 2117.

If a visitor enters the building trying to find an event, but without an exact room number, how can he/she find out which room?

In the absence of complete, centralized information about rooms and events, lead the visitor to the Dean's Office (Room 1110) and ask Becki Spangler or Mary DeLano to check the meeting room schedule, or stop by Administrative Services across the hallway and ask Joyce Coury to check the meeting room schedule.

Is there a computer lab in the building?  

Yes, there is--on the third floor, right across from the elevator and stairwell.   This lab is open from 7:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.   There are two classrooms within the lab that can be reserved by instructors online: http://www.itcs.umich.edu/sites

The two classrooms are called the New Media Center (which includes more advanced video editing capabilities) and the School of Education classroom.

The School of Education also has a laptop cart and three multimedia rooms (Room 2225 and 2229), two of which have significant numbers of computer work stations.

If I'd like to reserve a room for a special meeting or event, what do I need to do?

First, you need to understand that it depends on the kind of room--but it probably makes most sense to submit a request electronically, rather than traveling on foot from office to office.

What is the school doing to connect with the University's efforts around information technology security planning?

This year the University has also identified another area of concern for each unit to begin addressing. It is essential that we be able to protect information assets, safeguard the integrity of institutional processes, and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.   Our School's information security plan will support the unique business and technology needs of the School of Education, as well as the strategic priorities of the University relative to information security. Steps required in this process are: integrate IT security planning into business decision making, identify critical and sensitive information, conduct periodic IT risk assessments, and establish and implement unit-level security plans and procedures.

If I've locked my keys in my office, what should I do?

During regular building hours, you should have a friend send an e-mail to mnapoli@umich.edu or stop by the Facilities Office, through the door in the mailroom near the mailboxes, and talk to Mike Napolitan. Another option would be to ask any custodial staff you see in the hallway for assistance. If Mike is out of the building, or if it is outside regular building hours, then call Public Safety at 763-3434.  

Where is the lost and found box?

The lost and found box is located in the Facilities Office, through the door in the mailroom near the mailboxes.

Is there a pop machine in the building?

Yes!   In the lounge on the first floor--across from the Tribute Room, and down the steps from the fountain.

If a graduate student is supposed to get paid, but for some reason, doesn't, or if he/she is charged tuition, but he/she isn't currently enrolled for the semester in question, where should this person go for help?

The graduate student should begin by stopping by Administrative Services in the 1034 suite and explaining what happened.   The staff who work there will work with the student to solve the problem, or steer him/her to the right office on campus for resolving the situation.

What do I do if I perceive conflict-of-interest issues involving one of my professors?

Talk with the Associate Dean for Research, Joe Krajcik.   He is responsible for treating such matters confidentially and ethically.

What is the school doing to plan for possible avian flu or infectious hazards?

This year each unit in the University must make plans to prepare for an outbreak of avian flu or infectious hazards.   We will be creating SOE plans for these possible crises. Our efforts will require input from all levels and units of the school.   We are currently determining what are critical roles within the school and planning for how our most important tasks would be accomplished if there were widespread illness and faculty and staff absenteeism or if part of the University were closed.
