Endowed Scholarships for Master of Arts with Certification (MAC) Program
Since the launch in 1991 of an innovative master’s degree program by the University of Michigan School of Education students have had an unparalleled opportunity to become outstanding teachers and educational leaders capable of promoting innovative change and leadership in a variety of educational settings. Because of the MAC (Master of Arts with Certification) program’s unique timeframe, highly qualified professionals (e.g., engineers, attorneys, nurses, social workers, artists) interested in a career change have been attracted to the School of Education. This intensive program enables the School of Education to provide highly skilled and trained teachers who have work experience in other professions… one of the most urgent needs of today’s schools.
- Number of students involved: 100 per year in four cohorts of 25 each. Fifty students pursue secondary certification in the MAC program. Fifty students pursue elementary certification in the ELMAC program.
- Students complete the MAC and ELMAC in 4 semesters over 12 months through an intensive program of full time coursework and a full-year teaching internship. Because of the program’s intensity, students cannot do outside work.
- Cost of MAC in-state tuition is $20,000/year per student with few scholarships available.
- MAC students work with public schools in Detroit, Romulus, Wayne/Westland, Saline, Ann Arbor
How would gifts make a difference?
Most students pursuing the MAC leave other careers to take up teaching, thus they are older than the traditional Master’s students, and often have family responsibilities. Yet their very maturity is a huge asset in the classroom. There are few scholarships available to assist these career-changers. Campaign contributions would help assure continued enrollment of these highly-valued prospective teachers.
With your support you can make a difference by helping us establish a scholarship.
