Click here to download this document as an Adobe Acrobat PDF

** ES and CSHPE Doctoral Students Only **

In addition to the guidelines established by the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, Education doctoral students in ES and CSHPE must also follow these guidelines when forming a dissertation committee:

  • The dissertation committee shall be chaired by a regular member of the graduate faculty of the School of Education in the student’s program from which the degree recommendation is to be made.  The program chair and the Education Deans’ Office representative may approve another School of Education faculty member for this role (from outside the particular program recommending the degree) by certifying that the proposed chairperson has special competency or expertise for the role.
  • The program chair and Education Deans’ Office representative must approve the membership of the dissertation committee before the membership can be submitted to Rackham for final approval.
  • When nominating University faculty and staff not included in Categories 1-8 of the Rackham Guidelines for Dissertation Committee Service and individuals outside the university, the student is required to submit a rationale statement to support the nomination.  The statement should describe how the nominee’s qualifications and expertise relate to the dissertation.  The student must also include a copy of the nominee’s curriculum vitae.
  • The School of Education will prepare and submit the Rackham required dissertation committee form(s).

If you have any questions regarding Rackham’s and/or the School of Education’s guidelines, contact Joan McCoy ( jemccoy@umich.edu or 734-764-7569 ) in the Office of Student Services, Room 1033.
