Doctoral Students in Educational Studies and the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education Only

In addition to the guidelines established by the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, Education doctoral students in ES and CSHPE must also follow these guidelines when forming a dissertation committee:

  • Refer to the Rackham web site for their guidelines and review the following:
    Guidelines for Dissertation Committee Service
Quick Reference Chart for Membership on Dissertation Committees

  • University faculty and staff who are not “Graduate Faculty (as defined in the Rackham Guidelines for Dissertation Committee Service) and  qualified people from outside the University of Michigan who may or may not hold academic appointments and whose service on the Dissertation Committee would contribute significantly may be nominated for special membership. Additional documents may be required and are described in the School of Education Dissertation Procedures document.

  • The dissertation committee shall be chaired by a regular member of the graduate faculty of the School of Education in the student’s program from which the degree recommendation is to be made. In extenuating circumstances, the program chair and the School of Education  Associate Dean for Academic Affairs may approve another School of Education faculty member (from outside the particular program recommending the degree) for this role as a sole chair by certifying that the proposed chairperson has special competency or expertise for the  role. It is recommended that you attach a rationale regarding this nomination to the School of Education internal form, Request for Approval of  Dissertation Committee. Additional information regarding this can be found in the School  of Education Dissertation Procedures document.

  • In extenuating circumstances, the program chair and the School of Education Associate Dean for Academic Affairs may approve another School  of Education faculty member outside the particular program recommending the degree to serve as a cognate member. It is recommended that you  attach a rationale regarding this nomination to the School of Education form, Request for Approval of Dissertation Committee. Additional information regarding this can be found in the School of Education Dissertation Procedures document.

  • When the student is ready to officially form the dissertation committee, the student submits the internal form, Request for Approval of Dissertation Committee. This form requires the signature of all members who are being nominated and the  program chair before the nominations will be submitted to the Rackham Graduate School for their review and approval. The form is submitted to the  Office of Student Affairs, Suite 1228, for processing.
