The primary purpose of the fourth-year review process is to provide a fair evaluation and sound judgment about contract renewals for junior faculty. It is also intended to simulate the tenure review process so that candidates practice preparing their file for review, document their achievements, and understand how they will be judged for promotion at the University of Michigan. The final decision for contract renewal rests with the dean and the school's Executive Committee. No other levels of review within the university are necessary for determining a candidate's contract renewal. A candidate may elect not to participate in the fourth-year review if she/he does not wish to renew her/his expiring contract at the University of Michigan. Candidates should notify the program chair by January 31 whether they intend to go up for fourth-year review and seek renewal of their contracts.
