Undergraduate Financial Aid Questions

How do I apply for financial aid?

  • If you are applying for need-based funding which is usually a student loan, please visit the Office of Financial Aids’s web site at at www.finaid.umich.edu/ or by calling their office at 734-763-6600. There are application materials required to complete this process.
  • If you are interested in merit-based fellowships and scholarships through the School of Education, you will need to complete The University of Michigan School of Education Award and Scholarship Application. Where can I find information on fellowships/scholarships to assist with my undergraduate program in the School of Education?

There are many resources for students to explore as they begin the application to the School of Education. The information below does not begin to capture all resources, but will offer some suggestions.

Is there a contact in the School of Education that I may speak to regarding funding opportunities?

Yes, the Financial Aid Coordinator in the Office of Student Services in the School of Education will assist you in answering questions or concerns regarding funding opportunities. The phone number is 734-764-7563, or you may e-mail the following address: ed.undergrad.admit@umich.edu .

If I have not yet been accepted to the School of Education, should I apply for financial aid?

Yes! This will ensure that all your materials are in, that you have met the required deadlines, and if an admission offer is made to you, your materials are ready for Committee review regarding scholarships as well as student loans.

If I receive a fellowship or scholarship through the School of Education, am I required to work? Am I required to pay this funding back to the School of Education?

The response to both questions is “no”. Fellowship or scholarship support is usually money paid directly to the student and is referred to as a “stipend” which the student may use as needed. Some fellowships or scholarships are awarded as tuition support. This type of funding is usually paid directly to the student’s account here at the University.

If I receive both a student loan and a fellowship or scholarship, am I eligible to keep both sources of funding?

If offered both, usually the student may keep both. However, your student loan package from the Office of Financial Aid may be adjusted. Please check with Financial Aid regarding adjustments to your financial aid package. (734-763-6600)

What is the cost of attendance as an undergraduate in the School of Education?

  • If you are interested in merit-based fellowships or graduate research or teaching assistantship appointments through the School of Education, you will need to complete the section in the Application for Graduate Studies which is the application to the Graduate School. Applicants are encouraged to submit a current resume with their application.

If I have not been accepted to my graduate program in education, should I apply for need-based financial aid (student loans) through the Office of Financial?

If you are planning on taking out student loans to help support you through the graduate program, definitely! This will ensure that all your materials are in so if you are offered admission, the Office of Financial AidThis link opens in a new window can immediately begin to process your paperwork. Waiting to hear of your admission will only delay the process.

How do I apply for a graduate research or teaching assistantship position?

There is a section included on the Rackham Application for Graduate Studies. The section will be reviewed by your program of study for consideration. Please include a current resume.

What does a graduate assistantship cover and what is expected of me should I accept the appointment?

Many assistantship appointments offered through the School of Education are at least quarter-time assignments. There are Graduate Student Staff Assistantships, Graduate Instructor Assistantships, and Graduate Research Assistantships. Your responsibilities will depend on the assistantship you receive. A quarter-time appointment requires at least 10-12 hours per week of work assisting a faculty member with either a research project or teaching a class. In exchange for this, you will receive a tuition waiver, salary, and a benefits package.

If I am offered multiple fellowships/scholarships from the University and the School of Education, am I eligible to keep all funding?

In most cases, a student would need to choose one source of funding. You should check with each source of funding about this matter and carefully review each award offer to be sure you are accepting what will be best for your needs.

Is there funding available for part-time graduate students in the School of Education?

Some funds may be available to support part-time graduate study, and funding decisions for part-time students will be handled on an individual basis at or near the time of admission. Applicants who intend to study part-time should indicate their interest in financial support on their Rackham Application for Graduate Studies. In addition, the desire to study part-time should be identified in the statement of purpose.

Is there funding available for international students applying to graduate programs in the School of Education?

There are limited funding opportunities to international students through fellowship or assistantship support. International applicants need to be aware that they must certify all educational and living expenses before they are offered formal admission to the University of Michigan. If an international student is offered funding, these funds would not support their entire program. International students would indicate their interest in funding support on their Rackham Application for Graduate Studies. Some international student visas will not allow the student to work.

If I am offered admission to the School of Education as a graduate student and also receive a fellowship or assistantship and wish to defer my admission, will my fellowship or assistantship be deferred?

In most instances the fellowship or assistantship will not be deferred. A student should send a letter or e-mail to the Office of Student ServicesThis link opens in a new window and their program of study in early November of the following year indicating that they wish to be considered for any fellowships or assistantships available through the School of Education. What is the cost of Master of Arts with Elementary or Secondary Certification Program?

The length of both the Elementary and Secondary MAC Program is 2 half semesters (summer and the following spring half semester), and 2 full semesters (fall and winter semester). Please refer to the following web site for current tuition costs as a graduate student in Education. The information indicates in-state and out-of-state and full-term and half-term tuition costs.
