Since the 1991 launch of an innovative program by the University of Michigan School of Education, university graduates and working professionals (e.g., engineers, attorneys, chemists, medical professionals, automotive executives) interested in a career change have been attracted to the Master of Arts with Certification (MAC) Program.
The MAC program, while intense, prides itself on its experiential approach. “MAC sees student contact as the primary focus and weaves the pedagogy around that,” Rachel teBrake, MAC ’04, explains. “You’re not just getting book knowledge. When I applied for jobs, interviewers were very impressed that I’d had a full year of hands-on experience.”
teBrake, a former automotive engineer, also found a strong support group within her cohort. “From the first meeting, there is an emphasis on camaraderie and team building,” teBrake recalls. “This is the boot camp of certification programs, and your cohort really helps you get through it.”
This June-to-June program makes it possible for those who have work experience in other professions to attain a teaching certificate and acquire a master’s degree in 12 months and to enter education ready to tackle complex challenges—one of the most urgent needs of today’s schools.
This information session provides an opportunity to learn about certification options at the elementary school, middle school, and high school level; meet faculty; learn about how coursework is integrated with a year-long teaching internship; and become familiar with the application process and curriculum for this program.
