A number of awards are available from the School of Education, and the

Of particular interest to those being certified is Perkins Loans. These
are low interest loans that may be forgiven depending upon where you eventually

Funding Packages and Funding Opportunities for MA (including MAC) and Ph.D. Students
There are many opportunities for financial aid for MA and Ph.D. students. These include fellowships, Graduate Student Research assistantships, and Graduate Student Instructorships. While many of these opportunities are presented to Ph.D. students, we occasionally provide the assistantships and instructorships to MA students.
Graduate Student Assistantships

GSIs: Students who receive Graduate Student Instructorships (GSI) are asked to teach a course, facilitate a lab experience, or work with student teachers in the field. GSIships pay tuition, fees and benefits, and provide a stipend depending upon how much time is required for the activity. Open positions are posted, and students may apply for them. GSRAs: Students who receive Graduate Student Research Assistantships (GSRAs) are asked to work on one of the research projects in a variety of capacities—observation, interviewing, data collection, literature review, writing, etc. These assistantships pay tuition, fees, benefits, and provide a stipend depending upon how much time is required for the activity. It is also possible to augment a regular research assistantship with hourly work on a research project.Please visit “Student Employment Opportunities” for the latest opportunities.
Graduate Student Packages (Multi-Semester or -Year)
Listed below are examples of various packages that provide graduate students with multi-semester and multi-year funding to either pay for or offset tuition costs. Some also provide stipends. While the awards for Ph.D. students often are guaranteed for three to four years, as long as the student makes satisfactory progress, additional positions are usually available for students in their fourth and fifth years.

SOE Masters Fellowship: Stipend toward tuition costs are offered to MA students and vary depending on in-state, or out-of-state status.

Rackham Education Masters Award: Three full semesters (or two half semesters and two full semester). The financial package includes: 70% toward tuition (applied to your student account); and a stipend during each award semesters that equal $6,000 in a full term, $3,000 in a half term. Grad Care health insurance during each award semesters.

The University of Michigan’s Regents and the 4-Year SOE Dean’s Scholars Fellowships: These fellowships provide Ph.D. students with tuition, fees, benefits and a stipend. It is expected that the students will be involved in a .50 assistantship for the second fellowship, and following the first year for the Regents.
- Three-Year SOE and Three-Year Educational Studies Ph.D. Fellowships: Three years of support funded by the School of Education and/or Educational Studies. Recipients receive the equivalent of a .50 assistantship, which includes salary/stipend, full tuition and benefits for fall and winter semesters.
- SOE Scholar’s Award, also called the Rackham/Education Scholars Award: Five years of support. Ph.D. student Recipient will receive stipend, tuition and benefits for fall and winter semesters. In addition, during the spring/summer semester, recipients receive benefits and a stipend. Recipients are expected to work for 10-16 hours/week during the academic year.
In addition to these packages, there are a number of awards and fellowships available from the School of Education and Rackham Graduate School that provide support for students, such as one-term dissertation awards, travel grants, and the non-traditional student fellowships.
