Alexandra Miletta
Ph.D. Specialty Area: Teacher Education
Present Position: Assistant Professor, Childhood Education, The City College of New York, CUNY
Dissertation Topic: In my research I examined daily life in three classrooms (an Italian kindergarten, and third grade and seventh grade classrooms in Michigan) using an ethnographic approach and discourse analysis of telling events to understand how teachers manage dilemmas. I was also interested in understanding how the classroom climate contributed to the moral and intellectual development of students, and how they understood their teachers' intentions.
Prior to coming to the SOE: I taught 5th and 6th graders in a suburb north of Seattle.
What I Learned in the Program: I learned to think in scholarly ways, to engage in meaningful intellectual conversation with my fellow students and professors, and to write with clarity and conviction. My years supporting student teachers in Detroit's schools and doing research on the Manner in Teaching project were especially formative and have instilled in me a lifelong committment to improving urban education.
