Undergraduate Teacher Certification: Major and Minor Requirements

Students should develop in-depth knowledge in two of the areas they will teach by completing an academic major AND an academic minor selected from Language Arts, Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Fine Arts. Whereas the courses selected to fulfill the general studies requirements provide a basic foundational understanding, completing a major and minor develops a depth of understanding and provides the student with a systematic study of organized bodies of knowledge. In doing so, students begin to place their fields of study in perspective. They begin to gain an understanding of the multiple ways in which knowledge in a field may be organized and represented and how that organization influences further understanding.

To encourage students to think of their major area of study in terms of its historical and social implications, as well as to further integrate knowledge of the subject with the pedagogy of the subject, an advanced methods course in the disciplinary area addressing the epistemological foundations of the area is included in the requirements for the academic major.

It is crucial that the core requirements and the major and minor comprise a sequential, coherent program of study rather than an accumulation of courses scattered across a number of departments. To facilitate this coherency the School of Education has developed the following list to assist students with fulfilling their academic requirements for a language arts major or minor. Students are also encouraged to meet with their academic advisor.

Possible Academic majors:

Language Arts

Mathematics

Integrated Science

Social Studies

Possible Academic minors:
