Toward this end, we aspire to serve as the world’s benchmark for enabling students to reach their highest potential, creating knowledge and innovative practices that transform institutions of higher education. Not only will graduates of CSHPE's Higher Education program have in-depth knowledge and competencies to effectively manage the ubiquitous change currently facing higher education, but they will be prepared to lead—to enable institutions to achieve extraordinarily positive levels of performance and to exceed expected outcomes.

Faculty in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education are committed to the development of scholars and practitioners who will improve the world of higher and postsecondary education. Whether graduates of CSHPE's Highere Education program become administrators, academic leaders, public policy experts, members of the professoriate, training and development professionals, or expert consultants, they become leaders in their chosen fields. We educate individuals to think analytically, excel at scholarship and research, and apply creative solutions to important educational issues. Our students and scholars demonstrate the capacity to make a positive difference in postsecondary education, an uncompromising commitment to human diversity in all areas, and leadership of the highest integrity. It is our goal to develop scholars and practitioners in postsecondary education who can lead effectively through thought, word, and deed.

The leadership capacities we seek to develop in students distinguish our graduates as leaders who:

  • demonstrate an appreciation for the multiple perspectives and disciplines that inform higher education issues, approaches to leadership that are conceptually grounded and effectively practiced, superior analytical and communication skills, and a passion for improving higher education’s contribution to society,
  • demonstrate skills and personal attributes that enable them to conduct high quality research on important issues, apply the findings to educational policy and practice, and lead organizations by showing their capacity to see their educational missions within larger institutional, social, and geographic contexts;
  • make a significant difference in the lives of students they teach, staff they supervise, organizations they lead, and stakeholders they serve; and
  • conduct themselves according to the highest professional and ethical standards of the field, and who inspire others through their wisdom, compassion, and the many ways they show respect for others.

Students who study higher education at Michigan not only gain the knowledge, skills, and the practical experience to be leaders, but also learn to be leaders who make a difference.
