Elizabeth Fisher - Master's Student, 2003-2004

Areas of Interest: intergroup dialogue, women in higher education, feminist pedagogy, LGBT issues in higher education
I came to the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education Master's program directly after completing my undergraduate degree in English at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. I wanted a career in higher education and thought CSHPE would give me a chance to explore the topics I was interested in and gain practical experience in academic and student affairs.
My time at CSHPE gave me the chance to explore a variety of areas within higher education and to focus and refine my future goals for a career in higher education. My interaction with the faculty and staff at CSHPE and especially with my fellow students provided me with numerous opportunities to grow professionally and personally. I especially appreciate the diverse interests and specializations of the members of the CSHPE community which enables an amazing opportunity for the exchange of ideas. Particular classes I would recommend are EDUC 873 Race, Ethnicity and Gender in Higher Education, EDUC 874 Law and Higher Education, EDUC 771 Women in Higher Education, and SPEC 709 Dialogue Facilitation (This class is offered through the School of Social Work.).
I found my internship experience to be particularly valuable. I had the opportunity to work in educational outreach for the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies. I worked with a wonderful group of people and, through this internship, I was able to learn about the University and student affairs in a practical setting and to bring that knowledge to my studies.
Since graduating from CSHPE in December of 2004, I have been employed at University of Michigan as Graduate Financial Aid Coordinator for the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department. I am excited to be working at University of Michigan and I continue to utilize the skills and knowledge I gained in my time at CSHPE.
If you have any questions about University of Michigan or CSHPE, please e-mail me at egf@eecs.umich.edu. I'd be happy to talk to you.
