Steven G.W. Moore (PhD ’92) - In July 2007, Steven was named CEO/ED of The M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust in Vancouver, Washington. The trust provides grants and programs for higher education, arts & culture, social services, and science education.
Michael Weiskopf (BS 1995) has achieved national board teacher certification in adolescent and young adult mathematics. He is one of only five teachers in Michigan to have earned this certification. He is in his eleventh year teaching mathematics at Walled Lake (MI) Western High School.
Seth Oppenheim (BA 1999) has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar to France. He will be assigned to the Division of Cultural Heritage at UNESCO in Paris to work on cultural heritage legal issues. Previously, he was in Vienna as a Fulbright Scholar to Austria.
Marlisa Johnson (MA 1997) director of Mathtopian Preparation, a private tutoring firm based in Los Angeles, was recently appointed to the Advisory Board of the Central Cities Affiliate of the CA Association for the Gifted. She also serves as the 2nd District Representative of the Los Angeles County Community Action Board.
Kendra Hearn (Cert. 1993) earned her Doctor of Philosophy degee in Curriculum and Instruction from Wayne State University (2005). Michael Paul Goldenberg (MS 1997) has accepted a full-time faculty position with the School of Education at University of Michigan-Flint beginning May 2006 to teach mathematics for teachers and mathematics education courses.
Matthew Francis (BA 1996) was hired by the Ann Arbor Fire Department in December of 2005. His duties include protecting University of Michigan property and providing emergency medical care to students. He comments, “It is great to be back in Ann Arbor.”
Antonio R. Flores (PhD 1990) received the 2005 Hispanic Magazine Achievement Award for his work as president of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. Since he took office in 1996, the organization has more than doubled its membership. Today HACU serves more than two-thirds of the nearly two million Hispanic students in higher education.
George Falkenhagen (MS 1990) is seeking a third term in Oscoda (MI) school board service. He served a twoyear term ending in 2003, then ran again and was elected to his current term in 200 . Falkenhagen taught in Oscoda schools for 31 years and currently is the coordinator at Alpena Community College’s Huron Shores Campus, as well as an adjunct instructor in biology and computer science.
Christian LeButt (BS1999); was a Finalist (Top 5) for the 2005 Michigan Teacher of the Year Award given by the Michigan Department of Education. Chris is currently teaching science classes at Lakeland High School. He created the Lakeland Future Problem Solving Club which won a state championship last Year.
Dave Corsa (BS 1972; 1994) completed a year long partnership between Ann Arbor’s Allen Elementary School and Hatsukaichi’s (Hiroshima, Japan) Ajinadai Nishi Elementary. He hosted three Japanese partner teachers in Ann Arbor in March 2004, worked for six weeks in Japan in June and July 2004, then completed science and cultural activities via the Internet between students from both schools until March 2005. His fully funded program was sponsored and organized by the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund.
Tracey Cohen (BS 1993) completed her 25 months as a United States Peace Corps volunteer on April 29, 2005. She is now working at the newly opened Commerce Township library, doing children’s programming.
Derrick Fries (EdD 1993) is Deputy Superintendent of Avondale (MI) Schools. He has recently been nominated to the Sailing World International Hall of Fame. Since 1971 he has won six world sailing titles and nine North American titles, He is author of four sailing books, including Start Sailing Right, the acclaimed official text of the U.S. Sailing Association and the American Red Cross. He is the First Master
Instructor Trainer for the U.S. Sailing Association.
Dr. Mary L. Hummel (PhD CSHPE 1990) has accepted a new position as Director of Housing and Residence Life at the University of North Carolina- Greensboro. Dr. Hummel recently served as Associate Director of University Housing at the University of Michigan, a position she had held since 1997. During the 2003-2004 academic year Dr. Hummel served as Interim Co-Director of University Housing at Michigan. Also at Michigan she worked with the College of Literature, Science and the Arts on two residentially-based academic programs and was founding director of the Women in Science and Engineering Residence Program.
Laura Hovey-Salinas was selected in 2004, from a national applicant
pool to attend one of 31 summer seminars supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities. She participated in a seminar entitled, “Spanish Painting and the Literature it Inspired.” The five-week program was held in Madrid, Spain and was directed by John R. Rosenberg of Brigham Young University.
The 15 teachers selected to participate in the program received a stipend of $3250 to cover part of their travel, study, and living expenses. In December of 2004, Laura also completed her master’s degree at Marygrove College. In 2005 she will begin her ninth year of teaching Spanish and her fourth year at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School.
Kathryn (Kathy) (Clabuesch) Snyder married Mike Snyder in June 1993. Haylee was born in May 2000 and Cayden in September 2002. Kathy has been teaching secondary psychology, sociology and AP psychology, plus coaching cheerleading, at Dow High School in Midland, MI. She earned an MA in counseling from Central Michigan University in1999.
