Leonard W. Brumm, Jr (BS 1950), or “Oakie” to those who knew him, a former University of Alaska Fairbanks hockey coach, athletic director, and men’s basketball coach, passed away on January 17, 2006, in Racine, Wisconsin, after battling an aggressive form of cancer. Mary Louise Hook Allen (BS 1951) is the author of her father’s biography, Fightin’ Frank, about Frank Hook, the 12th District of Michigan’s only Democratic Congressman. Allen herself taught for 3 years in secondary school, followed by seven years in higher education. She says, “Without my undergraduate years at UM, I would never have been in Who’s Who in American Education,” and received numerous other awards and recognitions for her career in women’s sports and teaching.
William Smith (AM 1956) retired school superintendent in Alsip, IL, was presented the “Key to the City” by the Orland Park mayor for his leadership in conducting 27 Orland Open Spelling Bees. More than 100 spellers each year strive to be “The Best Speller in Town” and the competition is open to spellers of all ages, from precocious tots to senior citizens.
Raja T. Nasr (AM 1954; EdD 1955) is now Professor of Education and Applied Linguistics at Marymount University in Arlington, VA. He was at one time Director of the English Language Research and Teaching Center at the American University of Beirut. He has authored more than 40 articles and 50 books. He has trained language teach-
ers in 21 countries on four continents.
