Professional Development Fund
In our continuing drive to make a difference in the world of education, we must look beyond campus and extend our reach into K-12 classrooms nationwide. Independently and in collaboration with other U-M units, we must create innovative non-degree programs that enhance the knowledge and performance of practicing teachers.
One example is the proposed Michigan Summer Institute in Education. We envision a multilayered experience that will combine professional development programs for education professionals and special programs for school and college students. By offering different kinds of programs under the unifying umbrella of the Institute, we will be able to create rare sites for collaborative study and special opportunities for professional training. By providing research and teaching opportunities for P-12 teachers, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and higher education professionals and faculty, the Institute will provide a venue for the integrated study of practice.
Currently, many of our faculty offer professional development as a component of their research. However, a separate, freestanding Professional Development Fund will enable us to focus more intently—and channel resources directly—into non-degree programs for K-16 teachers.
A gift of $10,000 will sponsor a team of four teachers to participate in a Summer Institute program, or a superintendent and three leaders from the same district to participate in a leadership academy.
