Strengthening Subject Matter Knowledge Among Teachers.
Effective teachers do much more than convey facts. They help students to understand ideas, apply knowledge in context and solve problems skillfully. But what, exactly, is involved in teaching young learners to write a clear argument? How does one make the physics of force comprehensible to a class of seventh graders? What does it take to develop an understanding of sources and their relationship to historical accounts? Here at the University of Michigan, leading scholars in literacy, science, history, and mathematics are investigating what makes some ideas and skills hard to learn, or challenging to teach. They are also developing approaches to improve instruction in specific domains.
